Two physicians appointed to administrative positions

Two UNMC physicians have been appointed to administrative positions within the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine.

Tim McCashland, M.D., has been named the medical director of liver transplantation, and Mark Mailliard, M.D., has been appointed the interim chief of the section of gastroenterology and hepatology. Drs. McCashland and Mailliard assumed their new roles Sept. 1 when Michael Sorrell, M.D., stepped down from his administrative duties. Dr. Sorrell will continue to treat patients in his general practice.

“Both Dr. Mailliard and Dr. McCashland bring a wealth of experience and talent to their new positions,” said Debra Romberger, M.D., interim chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine. “I am excited for the directions in which they will lead their group.

“I would be remiss if I did not thank Dr. Sorrell for his service. He has incredible passion for the practice of medicine, especially in gastroenterology and hepatology, for scholarship in medicine, and for mentoring residents, fellows and faculty. He went above and beyond the ‘call of duty’ administratively when he agreed to take on the section chief position these last few years. His patients and colleagues are happy to know that he is not retiring but only stepping down from his administrative duties.”

Dr. McCashland earned his medical degree from the UNMC College of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency and a fellowship in gastroenterology/hepatology at UNMC, as well as a fellowship in endoscopy at Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland. He joined the UNMC faculty in 1993.

“Our liver transplantation program has been a perennial top program since Dr. Sorrell and Dr. (Byers) Shaw started it in 1985,” Dr. McCashland said. “Our goals are to continue to provide excellent care to patients who have liver disease, including those who require liver transplants. Our team has profound dedication, and it’s an honor to be part of it.”

Dr. Mailliard also earned his medical degree from the UNMC College of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at UNMC and a research fellowship at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha. He completed a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center in 1987. He remained on the full-time faculty at Florida until 1995, when he became the director of the Division of Gastroenterology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. In 1998, he returned to Omaha, becoming an associate professor at UNMC and chief of the Gastroenterology Section at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Omaha.

“The Gastroenterology Division, with its patient care, teaching and research activities at UNMC, Clarkson and Veterans Hospitals, has a long tradition of excellence due in no small part to a 35-year history of remarkable leadership,” Dr. Mailliard said. ” I am honored by the opportunity to assume a role in its overall direction. I am extremely grateful for the mentoring received from Dr. Sorrell and know his guidance will continue to be invaluable.”
