Omaha Women’s Health and Wellness conference Oct. 22

The seventh annual Omaha Women’s Health and Wellness Conference will be Friday, Oct. 22, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Holiday Inn Convention Center, 72nd & Grover Streets.

The “Art of Living with Stress” conference will feature educational health and wellness exhibits and screenings, continental breakfast and luncheon, keynote speakers and seven stress-related educational lectures.

picture disc.The conference is sponsored by UNMC, the UNMC Olson Center for Women’s Health, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, The Nebraska Medical Center and Wellness Council of the Midlands.

The cost of the conference is $40, which includes breakfast, lunch, lectures and about 25 exhibits. For an additional $30, nurses can receive 5.4 continuing education credits. Limited scholarships are available for women with financial restrictions. Free and low cost screenings will be available, including glaucoma, blood pressure, cholesterol and thyroid function screenings, as well as flu shots.

Scheduled breakfast keynote speaker is Louise Jeffrey, Ph.D., clinical health psychologist, The Nebraska Medical Center. Her breakfast keynote is titled, “Coping with the Stress of Everyday Life.” The luncheon keynote speaker will be Mary Kay Mueller, author of “Taking Care of Me: The Habits of Happiness.” She will discuss, “3 High Ways to a Positively Powerful Life.”

Conference attendees can choose from a variety of breakout sessions throughout the day. General sessions are titled, “Never Mind the Stone, Lookout for the Hole: Professional Women Managing Stress,” and “Taking Home a Piece of Health & Wellness from the Day.”

Breakout sessions include: “Meditation as Medication,” MaryAnn Calta, The Nebraska Medical Center, “The Extreme Makeover – More Exercise, Less Stress,” Debra Parker, Omaha Tribe of Nebraska; “Physical Effects of Stress,” Diana Curran, M.D., UNMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; “Healthy Eating on the Run,” Nessie Ferguson, The Nebraska Medical Center; “Aromatherapy & Music Therapy,” Mary Megel, Ph.D., UNMC College of Nursing; “Managing Stress: A Focus on Herbs & Nutraceuticals,” Teri Gabel, Pharm.D., Drug Therapy Consultants, PC.
