Faculty to be honored for service at annual meeting today

Many UNMC faculty members will be honored today (Tuesday) for their years of service to the university. Faculty who have worked at UNMC for 30, 20 and 10 years will be recognized today at the Annual Faculty Meeting, which will begin at 4 p.m. in the Durham Research Center auditorium.

In addition to the service awards recipients, five UNMC faculty will receive special awards today. Kathleen Barr, Ph.D., an associate professor in the College of Nursing, will receive the inaugural Spirit of Community Service Award. Four faculty will receive this year’s Oustanding Teaching Awards. They include, Robert Binhammer, Ph.D., Kurtis Cornish, Ph.D., Robert Lahue, Ph.D., and Jane Potter, M.D. Profiles of these five award recipients can be found in the UNMC Today online archives.

Today’s meeting also will include the annual address from Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.

Nine faculty members from three colleges will be recognized for 30 years of service. They include: Joseph Anderson, M.D., David Bolam, M.D., Barbara Hurlbert, M.D., Michael Leibowitz, Ph.D., J. Graham Sharp, Ph.D., Irving Zuecker, Ph.D., Janice Rustia, Ph.D., Joan Westfall, Ph.D. and Clarence Ueda, Pharm.D., Ph.D. The names of those faculty who have served at UNMC for 20, 10 and 5 years are listed near the end of this article.

30-year service awardees

College of Medicine

Joseph Anderson, M.D.

Joseph Anderson, M.D., is vice chairman and professor in the UNMC Department of Radiology. He also is section chief of the Cross-Sectional Body Imaging Fellowship within the department.

A native of Stromsburg, Neb., Dr. Anderson graduated from UNMC in 1968. After an internship at Wayne County General Hospital in Eloise, Mich., and two years of service in the U.S. Naval Reserve, Dr. Anderson completed his residency at UNMC.

A funded researcher in several areas of radiology throughout the years, Dr. Anderson has authored multiple published abstracts and articles during his career. He also has been a stalwart on many campus committees throughout the years. He has been on the UNMC Faculty Senate since 1991, including a term as president in 1994-1995. He has won several awards for his teaching and clinical service, including the Best Doctors in America Award in 2003-2004.

David Bolam, M.D.

David Bolam, M.D., is an associate professor in the UNMC Department of Pediatrics. He also is the medical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UNMC’s hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center.

A 1970 graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine, Dr. Bolam joined the UNMC faculty following a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship of neonatology, both at UNMC.

Since joining the UNMC faculty, Dr. Bolam has served on several campus committees. He currently is on the hospital’s Critical Care Committee and the University Medical Associates (UMA) Operations Committee. He also is a member and past-chairman of the Fetus & Newborn Committee of the Nebraska Academy of Pediatrics. He has published more than 20 journal articles on various topics of neonatology.

Barbara Hurlbert, M.D.

Barbara J. Hurlbert, M.D., is a professor in the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology. She is the director of Resident Education in Anesthesia and director of the Anesthesiology Senior Medical Student Clerkship

A native of Omaha, Dr. Hurlbert earned her medical degree from UNMC in 1971. After an internship at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, she completed her anesthesiology residency at UNMC in 1974. Immediately thereafter, she began her career as a UNMC faculty member.

The winner of many teaching awards in the past, Dr. Hurlbert was awarded the Golden Apple Award by the American Medical Student Association this year. Dr. Hurlbert also has been selected as one of Omaha’s top physician and has been recognized as one of the top physicians in her specialty nationally. Her list of committee appointments is extensive. She is the immediate past- president of the Nebraska Society of Anesthesiologists and a member of the House of Delegates of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Hurlbert is the author of numerous journal articles, abstracts and book chapters in anesthesiology.

Michael Leibowitz, Ph.D.

Michael Leibowitz, Ph.D., is deputy director of UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute, director of the Nebraska Center for Disabilities at MMI, associate professor of pediatrics and section head in pediatrics for the rehabilitation medicine section.

A doctoral graduate of the University of Maryland, Dr. Leibowitz is responsible for the day-to-day management of MMI and leadership of the Nebraska Center for Disabilities. The center is federally funded by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities and provides administrative and core support to MMI in its efforts to help communities across the state respond to the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families.

Dr. Leibowitz’s research interest is in developmental disabilities and analysis and remediation of behavior problems in young children. He teaches a graduate course in child behavior analysis on campus for University of Nebraska at Omaha students and serves on numerous doctoral committees.

John Graham Sharp, Ph.D.

John Graham Sharp, Ph.D., is professor of genetics, cell biology and anatomy and professor of radiology and radiation oncology. He serves on the Radiation Health Center Advisory Board.

Dr. Sharp serves as principal investigator on several research grants including one that explores tissue engineering using adult stem cells. He is co-investigator with clinical colleagues on projects that attempt to use stem cells for therapy of lung and bone disorders and several cancers.

The experimental hematologist received his doctoral education at the University of Birmingham Medical School in Birmingham, England. He is co-editor of Cytotherapy, an international journal that covers the topic of cellular therapy for a variety of diseases.

Irving Zucker, Ph.D.

Irving H. Zucker, Ph.D, is the Theodore F. Hubbard Professor of Cardiovascular Research and chairman of the UNMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics. Dr. Zucker’s research is focused on cardiovascular research, including the causes and potential treatment of heart disease.

An internationally recognized expert on the reflex control of the cardiovascular system, Dr. Zucker was the first UNMC researcher to ever receive the prestigious Method to Extend Research in Time (MERIT) Award from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. The award provides long-term, stable support to investigators who are noted for their superior research competence and productivity.

Dr. Zucker received his doctoral degree in physiology from New York Medical College in New York City. He was named chairman of UNMC’s department of physiology and biophysics in 1989. He also is a past recipient of the University of Nebraska Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity (ORCA).

College of Nursing

Janice Rustia, Ph.D.

Janice Rustia, Ph.D., is an associate professor of Parent-Child, Administration Education and Science in the UNMC College of Nursing.

In August 1974, Dr. Rustia was employed by the College of Nursing to develop the graduate specialty of Maternal Child Health. Following its development, she administered it for 14 years. For 10 of those years, she obtained federal funding for the continued development and maintenance of the specialty. In 1990, she relinquished her administrative responsibilities for full time teaching in the newly formed PAES department of the College of Nursing.

Her past research interests focused on paternal role development and outcomes evaluation. Present research focuses on hyperbilirubinemia in breastfed infants. One of her most satisfying career accomplishments during her employment has been the establishment of the Family Health Care Center in 1993.

Joan Westfall, Ph.D.

Joan Westfall, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of the UNMC Department of Parent-Child, Administration Education & Science in the College of Nursing-Lincoln Division.

A native of Malcolm, Neb., Dr. Westfall earned her bachelor’s degree at Nebraska Wesleyan University, her master of science in nursing (MSN) at the University of Colorado and her Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The member of several College of Nursing committees over the years, Dr. Westfall continues to teach a course in family-centered maternity and women’s health nursing care, as well as a course in health policy and issues. Her research interests relate to maternity nursing. In 1996, Dr. Westfall received the UNMC Outstanding Teaching Award.

College of Pharmacy

Clarence Ueda, Pharm.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Clarence T. Ueda is the dean of the UNMC College of Pharmacy and a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy. Dr. Ueda received his Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from the University of California School of Pharmacy in San Francisco, California and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from the same institution.

Dr Ueda joined the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy as an assistant professor of Pharmaceutics in 1974, was promoted to the rank of professor in 1985, and was appointed dean of the College in March 1987. His previous administrative positions in the college include chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutics and the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

His research interests and teaching responsibilities are in the areas of basic and applied biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, with emphasis on factors affecting drug absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, intestinal lymphatic drug absorption, drug dissolution and renal drug disposition.

Dr. Ueda is licensed to practice pharmacy in two states and is a member of a number of pharmacy and scientific organizations, journal editorial boards, and national and state committees. He is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology and an elected member of the Biopharmaceutics Expert Committee of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
