The UNMC College of Nursing held induction ceremonies across the state on Feb. 22 to recognize 126 new nursing students as they commit to academic integrity and begin assimilating the values and behaviors of the professional nurse.

The ceremony also reiterated some of the most important values for the professional nurse and for the profession of nursing: responsibility, trustworthiness, honesty, fairness, and respect of others.

Ceremonies were held in Omaha, Scottsbluff, Kearney, and Lincoln.

During the ceremony, students recited an oath of professionalism and signed a pledge. They also received the college’s badge, which will be affixed to their uniforms, and the pen used to sign the oath.

“Public trust is an essential ingredient of effective health care,” said Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing. “Surveys indicate the American public ranks nursing as one of the most trusted of professions.

“The oath of professionalism taken by these beginning nursing students reminds them of the importance of professionalism, that is, responsibility, honesty, fairness, and respect for all patients. At the induction ceremonies, families and friends are asked to help students fulfill the pledge they have taken to uphold clinical and academic integrity and the highest professional standards.”
