ITS offers advice on latest e-mail worm

The e-mail worm known as “MyDoom” “Novarg” or “WORM_MIMAIL.R” is currently spreading throughout the Internet. In response, UNMC ITS assembled its technical Computer Incident Response Team (CIRT), took appropriate actions and continues to monitor the network traffic on campus.

UNMC e-mail users may see the following subject lines in their Lotus Notes mail:

Subject: Report to Recipient(s). The text will indicate you received an infected attachment and it was deleted.

or

Subject: DELIVERY FAILURE xxx TRANSACTION FAILED. The text will indicate the message you sent could not be delivered. Most likely you will not recognize the name of the recipient.

These messages are symptoms of the virus, but it does not mean your workstation is infected. You should delete the messages.

UNMC ITS again advises e-mail users to:

  • Ensure your virus protection is installed and has been updated this week with the most current file. UNMC’s e-mail and The Nebraska Medical Center e-mail servers are running antivirus software.

  • Do not open attachments from senders you do not know and be extremely cautious in opening e-mail attachments from senders you recognize. One symptom of the virus is that an e-mail can be sent to you which appears to be from someone you know.

Contact the UNMC Help Desk at 559-7700 or your designated support person with questions.
