Corporate Cycling Challenge registrations due July 28

Employees at UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, have pedaled the most miles at the past few Corporate Cycling Challenges, and Peter Pellerito is looking forward to keeping that tradition intact.

“It’s really a good time, and it’s for a good cause,” said Pellerito, a fitness specialist in the Center for Healthy Living. “We had really good turnout the past few years, and we hope that a number of people come out again this year.”

Register by July 28

Employees can participate in the Aug. 17 ride for free. Those riders who wish to purchase a T-shirt with logos of UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center must register for the event before Monday, July 28.

Pellerito said registering by July 28 also makes it easier for riders to have their miles count toward UNMC’s total. Only those riders registered will have their names listed on the check-in sheets at the ride “turn-around” points.

“All employees must check in at the turn-around to have their miles count toward the team total, but employees who registered late will need to have the volunteer write in their names and company affiliation in order to try and get credit for their miles.”

Pellerito suggests that potential riders fill out a registration and waiver, in case they decide to ride.

What is the Corporate Cycling Challenge?

The Corporate Cycling Challenge is a bike tour to raise funds for trail development in the Omaha area, and is sponsored by the Eastern Nebraska Trails Network. It is Nebraska’s largest single-day cycling event.

Pellerito said the event is structured like the Corporate Cup Run, in that participants sign up with their company (or in an open division if they are not affiliated with a company).

Going the distance

The challenge refers to number of miles ridden by the employee riders for each company. Family members’ miles do not count, although they also can participate. In 2002, as in the last several years, Med Center rode more miles than those from any other company, winning the challenge. In 2002, employees got credit for riding 1,911 miles, and their family members rode an additional 770 miles.

Riders again have the opportunity to participate in either the 10-, 26- or 45-mile tours.
