Connie Schnoes, Ph.D., a one-year post-doctoral psychology fellow at Munroe-Meyer Institute, was judged the winner of MMI’s Fourth Annual Poster Session, which took place May 14. Dr. Schnoes completed her Ph.D. in school psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln last August.

Dr. Schnoes’ study examined Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) medication management in a rural, primary care setting. A protocol was developed in cooperation with pediatricians, nurses and office staff. Pre- and post-implementation data were gathered to examine pharmacologic treatment rates, type and dose of medications prescribed; patient satisfaction; and satisfaction with the protocol. Judges commented that her poster project was “highly relevant” and was “difficult work done well, integrating into a busy practice.”

In all, 14 posters from graduate students were presented at the poster session. Thirteen faculty and staff posters also were presented, but those were not judged for the contest.

Pat Gromak, education coordinator at MMI, said that the poster session represents a “capstone” activity for students and advisors who participate in the MMI leadership and interdisciplinary training program for six months to a year. The posters offer dissemination of the research that the long-term trainees and postdoctoral students have undertaken with a faculty member. MMI is one of 36 programs in 29 states that have been awarded Maternal and Child Health federal training monies to support students in Interdisciplinary Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND).

Eighteen disciplines are involved in the interdisciplinary training, including developmental medicine, genetics, nutrition, occupational therapy, psychology, speech therapy, social work, physical therapy and orthotics/prosthetics, among others.

The poster session’s three judges included Brad Schaefer, M.D., a geneticist at MMI and director of the LEND grant; David Beukelman, Ph.D., director of the Barkley Memorial Center at UNL; and Wayne Stuberg, Ph.D., director of the MMI physical therapy department and The Brace Place. All are university graduate faculty fellows.
The other posters that were presented include:
