Portions of the new employee parking structure will be closed temporarily in the coming month so that the concrete joints, or spaces between the concrete pours, can be sealed.
“It doesn’t take long to seal these joints, but it requires three days to properly cure,” said Don Dickmeyer, project manager for the garage, which is UNMC Lot 50. “The sealing company is going to need to close off areas of the structure to install the sealant.”
Dickmeyer explained that all of the sealing on the structure’s top level has been completed. The contractor plans to proceed down the structure with the sealing process, barricading off a quarter of each level at a time. That work will begin either Wednesday, May 14, or Thursday, May 15. A new section will be sealed every three or four days. The entire project should take about four weeks.
“The joints are the full width of the structure and cannot be driven on until the sealant is dried,” Dickmeyer said. “Any joints on the ramps would be completed in halves, so that parking customers will have access to the other levels.”
Tina Spencer, manager of Parking and Cashiering Services, said that parking customers should have no problem finding a parking space during the sealing process. Lot 50 has 1,364 employee parking spaces available and there are still many available.
