UNMC Printing Services receives 2002 Partnership Award

Whether it’s a business card, a copy of a presentation, a poster, a hospital form or an edition of UNMC Today or NHS Week, the staff at UNMC Printing Services likely played a role in its production.

Under the direction of manager Allen Olson, the employees at UNMC Printing Services have worked as a team to create a stronger partnership with NHS by assisting it with its printing needs.

In recognition of its outstanding work, UNMC Printing Services, comprised of approximately 25 employees, was awarded the 2002 Chancellor’s Partnership Award, given annually to individuals or groups whose efforts have strengthened the partnership between UNMC and NHS. The Partnership Award is one of three major annual awards that recognize outstanding achievement in specific areas critical to the success of the UNMC strategic plan.

Working together

“We’re very proud to have received the Partnership Award,” Olson said. “Our working relationship with the people at NHS is very important to us and we appreciate the projects they give us.”

“They’ve done a great job for us,” said Karen Kubicek, graphics coordinator in NHS’ corporate communications & planning department. “They get projects done on time and at a reasonable price. It makes our department happy to see the projects printed and looking great.

“Kaleidoscope is a huge event for which they do all the printing. Everyone on our staff is always so grateful that they do such a wonderful job in a timely fashion.”

Improved services, quality

The services it offers and its improved level of quality have allowed Printing Services to establish a more positive working relationship with NHS. According to Olson, its biggest area of improvement over the past few years has been the addition of new digital copy machines which have allowed it to complete projects in less time and at a more reasonable cost.

UNMC Printing Services received a total of 18 awards for outstanding printing at the annual Heartland Print Gallery Banquet at Harrah’s Casino in Council Bluffs.

The awards were divided into three categories — gold, silver and bronze — with five of UNMC’s projects earning gold distinction: Ortho Surgery (Breaking News – Newsletter); NHS Marketing (Wild West Reunion – Transplant Invitation); Clarkson Service League (Envelope); Clarkson Service League (Letterhead); and Printing Services (Calendar/Football Schedule).

UNMC Printing Services also received nine silver and four bronze awards.




“Years ago, we used to ask for 10 working days to create a project, but we’re now able to do the same projects within a day or two on most occasions,” Olson said.

The copy center is currently equipped with two Xerox Docutechs, which have a combined output capacity of 235 digital copies per minute. It also possesses a Xerox 2045 that prints 45 full-color copies per minute and a high-quality wide printer, which can produce black-and-white or full-color posters and banners. Printing Services also is capable of doing offset printing and thermography, or “raised printing,” that creates an impressive look to business cards, invitations or other printed pieces.

The new technology has improved turnaround time and cut down on the cost of projects, but Olson also is proud of the level of quality Printing Services provides to its customers. “We feel we’re able to provide better quality projects,” Olson said. The quality of Printing Services’ projects is evidenced by the 18 awards it recently received at the Heartland Print Gallery banquet (see sidebar).

Added Olson, “We are committed to making it easy for people to do business with us.” Projects can be sent via any of the following means: through the campus mail; by placing an order online (info.unmc.edu/printmail/); by attaching files to an e-mail; by downloading files on the Web site or by server access (login required); by sending a file on a CD, Zip or regular disk; or by providing hardcopy to be typeset or copied. Printing Services also offers the campus community a free pickup and delivery service by calling 559-4282.

“They are very helpful and try their hardest to meet our short deadlines and sometimes demanding needs,” said Mandee Stephenson, who, like Kubicek, is a graphics coordinator in NHS’ corporate communications & planning department. “We enjoy working with them because they are close by and their prices are very reasonable. They are very deserving of the award.”
