Organizations, individuals asked to nominate women of color for event to honor outstanding contributions in business, education, volunteerism

Organizations and individuals are being asked to consider nominating

Omaha area women of color for awards that will recognize outstanding contributions

in four categories: business/entrepreneur, education, professional volunteer,

and youth. Nomination forms are due by Feb. 27.

Award recipients will be honored at the first University of Nebraska

at Omaha Women of Color Awards Luncheon 2003, which will be held in March.

The event is sponsored by UNO, ConAgra Foods, Inc., and State Farm Insurance.

Guest speaker will be Joyce Roché, president and chief executive

officer of Girls Incorporated in New York. Girls Incorporated is a national

research, education, and direct advocacy organization that encourages girls

ages six to 18 to take risks and master physical, intellectual, and emotional

challenges.

We are proud to provide an opportunity to recognize achievements of

women of color for the selfless contributions they make as leaders, role

models, mentors and engaged leaders in the community, said Mary Mudd,

Ed.D., vice-chancellor of student affairs, University of Nebraska at Omaha

(UNO). It is important that the diverse perspectives, insights and solutions

of these outstanding women be highlighted and celebrated in an effort to

encourage continued and future involvement of women of color.

Award recipients will be invited to participate in community speaking

events, and to serve as role models and mentors for various university-related

programs and activities.

University of Nebraska President L. Dennis Smith, Ph.D., charged the

committee to acknowledge outstanding contributions and leadership made

by women of color in the Omaha area. The luncheon event is scheduled for

Thursday, March 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the UNO Milo Bail Student

Center. Anyone is invited to attend. Cost is $25 a person. Organizations

can reserve tables of eight.
