Sandy Goetzinger-Comer, director of the department of public affairs at UNMC, will be honored by the YWCA Omaha today during its annual Tribute to Women luncheon. Goetzinger is one of eight “Women of Vision” who will be recognized.
For the past 15 years, the YWCA Omaha has paid tribute to women who have made significant contributions in the Greater Omaha Metropolitan area. Goetzinger-Comer will be recognized for her impact in the communications field, as well as for her community service and commitment to the elimination of discrimination.
A native of Omaha, Goetzinger-Comer joined UNMC in 1989 as the department’s publications coordinator. She became director of the department in 1993.
Colleagues say Goetzinger-Comer sets high standards for her own work and for the work of her staff, which help execute UNMC’s media strategies and respond to requests from the press; write and design publications to share with internal and external audiences; organize UNMC’s community relations efforts in the form of campus tours and visits of UNMC professionals to other sites; coordinate and design UNMC’s Web site; and create and disseminate UNMC’s image advertising strategy.
“The scope of Sandy’s work ranges from looking years in advance at long-term strategic planning to the immediacy of having to respond at a moment’s notice for a media interview,” one nominator said. “She has done a superb job as director…and has been a true ambassador for UNMC.”
A graduate of Creighton University, Goetzinger-Comer serves on the board of Mercy High School and on executive committees of Nebraskans for Research, Med Center Merchants Association and the 2002 Omaha Heart Walk. She also has been involved with YWCA Omaha, Leadership Omaha 2000, the United Way, the Boy Scouts and the March of Dimes.
