Inventor recognition reception May 23

UNeMed Corporation, UNMC’s technology marketing and licensing organization, and the UNMC Intellectual Property Office (IPO), will acknowledge UNMC inventors Thursday, May 23 during this year’s annual Inventors Recognition Reception.

The reception, open to all UNMC inventors, will be from 4 to 6 p.m. in the University Hospital Private Dining Room. Thursday’s reception will specifically recognize inventors on six UNMC patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office between February 2000 and December 2001.

UNeMed has launched a new Web site at www.UNEMED.com. The Web site will serve as a marketing tool to introduce UNMC technologies to a broader audience. It also will serve as a resource for information about UNeMed’s technology transfer efforts on behalf of UNMC.

Of the 268 U.S. patents held by the University of Nebraska, 94 are the result of work carried out at UNMC. UNMC researchers become inventors of patented technology by working with the IPO. Each year the IPO receives 25 to 30 invention disclosures for evaluation. Roughly, one third are selected for patenting by UNMC’s Technology Evaluation and Protection Committee. The resulting patents contribute to the assets of the university and are used to attract commercial partners interested in gaining rights to the protected inventions.

Technology licensing and other technology transfer related activities support the community of Omaha and the state of Nebraska by assisting in the development of UNMC-technology based start-up companies. These start-up companies currently support about 100 jobs in the local Omaha community.

The reception will recognize the substantial efforts of UNMC inventors toward securing rights to intellectual property developed on campus. Commemorative plaques will be awarded to those UNMC inventors whose patents were most recently issued. This year’s reception will specifically recognize inventors on six UNMC patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office between February 2000 and December 2001.
