UNMC’s Lifestyle Enhancement Center to celebrate first anniversary

During the week of March 18 to 22, UNMC’s Lifestyle Enhancement Center will celebrate its first anniversary. The unique center offers a holistic approach to health care by providing customized programs that help individuals map their way to a healthier and more peaceful life. The center is located at 2255 S. 132nd St. and Montclair Drive, Suite B (the west end of the Prairie Life Center).

“We are pleased to be celebrating our first anniversary and are thrilled with the community’s response to health-care approaches that treat the body, mind and spirit,” said David Bouda, M.D., director of the Lifestyle Enhancement Center and UNMC’s complementary alternative program. “We are continually looking at how we can further enhance and improve our services to better serve clients of all ages.”

The center, an extension of UNMC’s Complementary Alternative Medicine Program, focuses on education, research and service. The center’s licensed staff is dedicated to enhancing people’s health by optimizing their success with conventional medical treatments, by relieving pain and disease, by managing stress and by minimizing the effects of the aging process. Clients receive complementary health care advice and treatments founded on clinical evidence and supported through scientific research.

During the past year, the center has greatly expanded its services and offerings to include:

  • Extending its hours to six days a week. The center, which is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., also has grown to nearly 30 contractors and 4.5 staff members.
  • Adding a graduate of a Chinese medical school to provide acupuncture. The recent change in state statutes regarding acupuncture enabled the center to contract with a graduate of a Chinese medical school. Prior to Jan. 1, the services had to be provided by a physician or chiropractor.
  • Forming a partnership with Metro Community College to offer health-related courses for the general public and adding a graduate level class on Complementary Alternative Medicine.
  • Adding yoga (including a class for women who are infertile), reflexology, and aesthetic services such as skin care, facials, manicures and pedicures. In addition, a nurse practitioner specializes in women’s health, especially natural hormone replacement therapy.

In celebration of its first anniversary, those visiting the Lifestyle Enhancement Center March 18-22 are encouraged to register for such door prizes as massages, acupuncture and other products. Free bone density screenings will be done Thursday, March 21 from 2 to 7 p.m. Call 595-1876 to set up an appointment.

The center offers a variety of other services including physician consultation, physician care management, therapeutic massage, REIKI, craniosacral therapy, therapeutic touch, heated stone massage, nutritional consultation, herbal consultation, biofeedback, coaching for executives, strength and flexibility consultation, stress management and weekend retreats.
