UNMC and NHS employees, students and their families can receive discounted admission to UNMC’s Health and Technology Day Saturday, Feb. 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Strategic Air and Space Museum. With an employee ID, admission to the museum and events is $5 for adults and $2 for children.
Speakers from UNMC will tell about the latest uses of technology during surgery, including minimally invasive surgery and robotics in the clinical laboratory. Also, the UNMC College of Nursing’s mobile nursing center will provide free blood pressure checks and diabetes screening. The Kids on the Block, a program to educate children about disability awareness and social concerns, will present shows about cerebral palsy and visual and hearing impairments.
In addition to featured speakers and demonstrations, the Strategic Air and Space Museum’s interactive Robotics Exhibit will be open to visitors. Visitors can shoot hoops with a seven-foot high robot arm, race against and build a robot, converse with a robot or see Dante — the NASA robot that descended into the Mt. Spurr volcano in Alaska.
To get to the Strategic Air and Space Museum from Omaha, take Interstate 80 to Lincoln and take exit 426. Visit the Strategic Air and Space Museum Web site to learn more about upcoming events.
The following presentations and demonstrations will take place Feb. 2:
- 11 a.m. — “Contemporary Neurovascular Intervention.” Robert Singer, M.D., will explain how minimally invasive techniques are used to treat blood vessel diseases affecting the brain.

- 1 p.m. — “Minimally Invasive and Robotic Approaches to Vascular Surgery.” Jason Johanning, M.D., will explain how new techniques to repair the largest arteries in the body are turning vascular surgery inside out.
- 1:30 p.m. — “Robotics in the Clinical Laboratory.” Rodney Markin, M.D., Ph.D., will describe how robotic technology invented in Nebraska is used in hospitals around the world to transport patient lab specimens to equipment for analysis.
- 2 to 2:45 p.m. — Kids on the Block presentation to educate children about disability awareness, medical/educational differences and social concerns.
