The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Kearney
Division invites anyone interested in pursuing a degree in nursing or learning
more about the field of nursing to attend an open house on Saturday, Nov.
3, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will be held in the colleges newly renovated
West Center building, 1917 W. 24th St., on the University of Nebraska at
Kearney campus.
Faculty, staff and students will be available to talk about UNMCs bachelors,
masters and doctoral nursing programs. Attendees will have the opportunity
to talk to a variety of nursing specialists about their roles, such as
nurse practitioners, certified nurse anesthetists, flight and emergency
room nurses, critical care nurses, and a labor and delivery nurse.
Its a wonderful time to be entering the nursing profession, said
Judy Billings, Ph.D., assistant dean of nursing, UNMC College of Nursing
Kearney Division. There are many opportunities available. Nursing is a
way to make a considerable impact on peoples lives. Its satisfying in
knowing youve helped someone through the struggle of a critical illness
or in the most wonderful times.
She said there are many benefits in a nursing career including job flexibility,
good pay, bonuses and loan repayment, job security and a personal sense
of fulfillment in a career choice.
Non-nursing courses taken to pursue a bachelor’s degree can be earned
at any accredited colleges and will apply toward a degree through UNMC.
Registered nurses don’t need a bachelor’s degree to enroll in the program
for registered nurses seeking a masters degree in nursing. Some of UNMC’s
nursing courses are accessible through the Internet, which offers students
the flexibility of learning at home according to their schedule.
There are more nursing opportunities than can be filled in the Kearney
area, Dr. Billings said. Were in the midst of a nursing shortage that
is forecasted to last at least through 2010. Hospitals and health care
facilities are clamoring for nurses.
Refreshments will be served. Parking is available to the west and north
of the West Center building.
The UNMC College of Nursing, the largest nursing school in the state,
has about 700 students at its Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney and Scottsbluff campuses.
It is the only nursing school in the state to offer undergraduate, master’s
and doctoral degrees. The Kearney Division, established in 1977, has graduated
more than 600 students, more than half of whom practice nursing in a 100-mile
radius of Kearney.
