Zetterman Elected President of the American College
of Gastroenterology
Rowen K. Zetterman, M.D., vice chairman and director of clinical operations
of the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s department of internal medicine,
has been elected the 2000-2001 president of the American College of Gastroenterology,
a national specialty association representing nearly 7,500 clinical gastroenterologists
and other specialists in digestive diseases.
Dr. Zetterman officially assumed his post as president Oct. 16 during
the College’s Annual Scientific Meeting in New York.
As president, Dr. Zetterman will direct programs which include continuing
medical education in the clinical, scientific and patient-related skills
of gastroenterology, policies involving national and state medical affairs,
managed care issues and clinical investigation.
Dr. Zetterman, a UNMC professor of medicine, also serves as chief of
the medicine department at the Omaha Veterans Affairs Medical Center and
clinical professor at Creighton University School of Medicine.
Dr. Zetterman earned his undergraduate degree from Nebraska Wesleyan
University in 1966. He graduated in 1969 from UNMC, where he completed
his internship, residency and gastroenterology fellowship. He also completed
a fellowship in hepatology and nutrition at New Jersey College of Medicine
at Newark. Prior to joining the UNMC faculty, he spent two years with the
Gastroenterology Service of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
He has served as a member of the ACG’s board of governors, board of
trustees and editor of “The American Journal of Gastroenterology.” During
his six-year term as editor, the journal grew from 1,900 to 2,700 pages
published annually and increased in acceptance and quality. In 1997, he
was awarded the William D. Carey Award by the ACG board of governors. The
following year, he received the Samuel S. Weiss Award in recognition of
his outstanding career service to the ACG.
