Physician Office Compliance to be Discussed

UNMC, Kutak Rock Offer October Legal Seminar

The University of Nebraska Medical Center and Kutak Rock is sponsoring

its Ninth Annual Healthcare Law Institute titled “Physician Office Compliance

in a Changing Environment,” Friday, Oct. 6.

Physicians, risk mangers and health care administrators are invited

to attend the one-day conference at the W.H. Thompson Alumni Center on

the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus, 67th and Dodge Streets. The

conference runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Participants will learn how to establish, monitor and review a compliance

plan for the physician office; identify the new privacy guidelines for

electronic medical records; and understand the new federal guidelines released

by the Office of Inspector General on physician compliance.

Featured presenters include: Alan Strasser, J.D., Kutak Rock; Cynthia

Haney, J.D., American Medical Association in Washington, D.C.; and Charles

Harris, Ph.D., president of Ambulatory Care Centers of America Inc., in

Butte, Mont.

Strasser, a litigation partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Kutak

Rock, will present “Compliance Update – What Physicians Need to Know.”

He graduated from Harvard Law School, and cum laude from Yale University.

He has been published in The New York Times.

Haney, senior Washington counsel at the American Medical Association,

will present the keynote address on “New Privacy Guidelines for Electronic

Medical Records.” She is an expert in physician professional standards

and patient privacy. She earned her law degree from George Washington University.

Harris, who has published articles on physician joint ventures and change

management, will present “Physician Practice Structures.” Other presenters

include: Laurie Kelly, J.D., civil healthcare prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s

Office; Wayne Henry, J.D., of Kutak Rock; Debra Fiala Breen, M.D., J.D.,

Kutak Rock; Rodney Markin, M.D., UNMC; Christopher Phillips, J.D., Kutak

Rock; Barb Pierce, Professional Management Midwest in Des Moines, Iowa;

and Kimberly Lammers, J.D., Kutak Rock.

The conference registration fee is $100 through Sept. 5, and $145 after

Sept. 5. No refunds will be given after Sept. 22. Participants may receive

up to six hours in Category 1 credit towards the AMA Physician’s Recognition

Award.
