James Armitage, M.D., dean of the University of Nebraska Medical Center
College of Medicine, has been elected president of the American Society
for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.
Dr. Armitages UNMC colleague, Julie Vose, M.D., professor of Internal
Medicine and Oncology/Hematology, was elected as the groups treasurer.
They will serve one-year terms in their respective positions, until the
ASBMTs annual meeting next February.
A member of the ASBMT board of directors since 1994, Dr. Armitage served
as the associations vice president in 1998 and president-elect in 1999.
Considered one of the worlds leading experts in the treatment of lymphoma,
Dr. Armitage established UNMCs bone marrow transplant program in 1982.
He has served as chief of UNMCs Section of Oncology and Hematology, and
throughout the 1990s was chairman of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine.
He became dean of the College of Medicine earlier this year.
Dr. Vose has been at UNMC since 1978 as a student, resident physician,
fellow and faculty member. She also is a leading lymphoma researcher. Her
findings have been published in more than 135 scientific journals and 24
books. Dr. Vose also has made more than 130 presentations of her research
findings.
ASBMT is a professional association representing the interests of blood
and marrow transplantation clinicians and investigators. Formed in 1993,
the association has about 1,000 members, including 18 who are UNMC faculty.
