Jon S. Thompson, M.D., has been named Chief of General Surgery in the
Department of Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
With 13 surgeons, the section of General Surgery includes the disciplines
of vascular surgery, general abdominal surgery, laparoscopic surgery, trauma
surgery, critical care and oncological surgery.
Dr. Thompson joined UNMC as an instructor in 1982. He was named assistant
professor in 1983, associate professor in 1986 and professor in 1991.
He has served as vice chairman of the department since 1992 and was interim
chairman in 1996.
Dr. Thompson who is also on the medical staff at the Omaha VA Medical
Center, has served as clinical investigator for the Swanson Center for
Nutrition since 1984 and as a member of the graduate faculty at UNMC since
1986. Dr. Thompson earned the UNMC Outstanding Faculty Award in recognition
of his commitment to teaching in 1992 and 1996.
He earned his undergraduate degree in 1972 and his medical degree in
1976, both from the University of Colorado. Dr. Thompson did his
residency in general surgery at the University of Colorado Medical Center
from 1976 to 1980. He was chief surgery resident at UCMC in 1980
and served a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Mayo Clinic
in 1981 before joining UNMC.
