May 16, 1997 — John Tinker, M.D., Joins UNMC to Head Department of Anesthesiology

John Tinker, M.D., has been appointed professor and chairman of the
University of Nebraska Medical Center department of anesthesiology. Since
1983, Dr. Tinker served as professor and head of the department of anesthesia
at the University of Iowa. Prior to that, he worked in the Mayo Clinic’s
cardiovascular anesthesiology department, from 1974 to 1983, serving as
department chief the last five years.

"Dr. Tinker brings important clinical and academic strengths to
UNMC, in addition to leadership skills and considerable experience,"
said Harold M. Maurer, M.D., College of Medicine dean. "He has built
one of the major anesthesiology departments in the United States. These
attributes are critically important as we strive to achieve excellence
together."

Dr. Tinker’s main area of research interest is coronary physiology and
anesthetics. As part of this research, he has developed new anesthetic
agents for use in the operating room. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr.
Tinker received his bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from the University
of Cincinnati College of Engineering in 1964 and his medical degree, summa
cum laude and was valedictorian for four years at the University of Cincinnati
College of Medicine in 1968.

He completed his internship in internal medicine in 1969 at the Peter
Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston and also completed
his residency training in general surgery and anesthesiology from the hospital
as well as a pediatric residency at Boston Children’s Hospital and a residency
in obstetric anesthesiology from Boston Lying-In Hospital.

He is co-author of one of the two major textbooks in the anesthesiology
field, and has more than 200 publications to his credit. Currently, he
serves as editor in chief of the Yearbook of Anesthesia and Pain Management.
Dr. Tinker has served on numerous national committees, including those
at the National Institutes of Health and with the American Society of Anesthesiology.
