A Kenyon College graduate (A.B., 1972), Byers W. Shaw Jr., M.D. has been named chairman of the University of Nebraska Medical Center department of surgery in Omaha.
Dr. Shaw, 46, has served as chief of transplantation since joining the UNMC faculty in 1985. An Ohio native, Dr. Shaw earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He did his surgery residency at the University of Utah before spending four years in the transplant surgery program at the University of Pittsburgh. He has been included among the best physicians in America by such publications as Good Housekeeping Magazine, American Health Magazine and Town & Country Magazine.
Under Dr. Shaw’s direction, UNMC has become one of the top solid organ transplant centers in the country. As chief of transplantation, Dr. Shaw has overseen UNMC’s liver, kidney, pancreas and small bowel transplant programs. Over the years, UNMC surgeons have performed nearly 2,500 solid organ transplants.
