Medical Students
The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center offers many different opportunities for students within UNMC as well as students from outside institutions.
If you are starting to explore surgical specialties, we invite students interested in neurosurgery to shadow one of our faculty members or talk to our current residents. Students are also welcome to attend our neurosurgery conferences and journal clubs. Please contact our resident coordinator to get on our email distribution list for conferences and upcoming events.
For students pursuing residency training in neurosurgery, we encourage you to join the UNMC American Association of Neurological Surgeons Medical Student Chapter. This medical chapter is dedicated to students exploring a career in neurosurgery and provides endless professional and educational opportunities.
Research opportunities are also available to students throughout the year. Our faculty have many opportunities available so we encourage you to reach out to us if you are interested.
The Society of Neurological Surgeons, in conjunction with the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, has established a website that offers a wealth of valuable information about pursuing a career in neurosurgery and applying to neurosurgery residency training programs. Information includes an overview of the residency match process, grades and USMLE scores, mentors, research, recommended rotations, ERAS application personal statement and letters of recommendation, interviews, and ranking programs. This is "must-read" material for students interested in entering neurosurgery residency training.
We are always happy to have medical students participate on our service and meet and work with our faculty, residents, APP's and staff. We look forward to meeting you!
