Neurocritical Care Fellowship

Dr. Subin Mathew, Fellowship Director

Welcome to The Nebraska Medical Center Neurocritical Care fellowship program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS).  Our program models strong clinical training, advancing research and an extensive educational curriculum. It is designed to focus on developing trainees' careers while also prioritizing their well-being. You will have the opportunity to learn and practice in a highly specialized, collaborative environment, working closely with experts in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Emergency Medicine, Trauma Surgery, Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine, Anesthesia, and Neuroradiology. We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of neuroscience nurses, respiratory therapists, speech and language pathologists, and advanced practice providers who support our mission

A distinctive feature of our fellowship is the progressive increase in autonomy, allowing fellows to take on more responsibility as they advance through the years of training. This stepwise approach ensures that fellows are fully supported as they develop their clinical skills, gradually building their confidence and independence in decision-making. Throughout the fellowship, fellows will become proficient not only in the medical management of a wide range of critically ill patients, but also in the specialized and complex care required for patients with acute neurologic injury. This includes mastering the nuances of advanced neuromonitoring techniques, which are essential for optimizing patient outcomes and guiding treatment in the field of neurocritical care.

Our program offers core rotations in vascular neurology, critical care EEG, neuroanesthesia, medical critical care, trauma critical care, critical care anesthesia, infectious disease, nephrology, and point-of-care ultrasonography. These rotations are designed to provide fellows with a well-rounded and deep understanding of both neurological and critical care disciplines. Fellows also enjoy substantial elective time, offering the flexibility to tailor their training to individual interests. This includes opportunities to enhance procedural and ultrasound skills, engage in clinical innovation, participate in quality improvement initiatives, or pursue independently mentored research projects. These electives allow fellows to explore their passions and develop specialized expertise in areas that align with their career goals, all while contributing to the advancement of patient care.

Our fellows gain expertise in the pre-operative and post-operative care of neurosurgical and endovascular patients, focusing on neurotrauma, stroke, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. They also gain experience in managing status epilepticus and develop skills in interpreting critical care EEG data for critically ill patients.

We are excited to welcome you as you begin your journey with the UNMC Neurocritical Care Fellowship Program. We look forward to supporting your career as an exceptional, world-class neurointensivist.
