Anthony Scalzo, MD

Dr. Scalzo is the Inaugural Director, Division of Neurotoxicology & Emergency Response at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Department of Neurological Sciences. Before joining UNMC, Dr. Scalzo held professorships in the Departments of Pediatrics (1982-2022), Internal Medicine (1990-2022), and Surgery (2010-2022) at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. 

Dr. Scalzo fell in love with neurology by diagnosing and treating patients with Serotonin Toxicity (formerly known as Serotonin Syndrome) and its effects on the CNS and PNS as a toxic manifestation of numerous drugs and toxicants. Dr. Scalzo holds board certifications in Pediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology.

Research Interests
  • Use of antidotal 4-methylpyrazole (fomepizole or 4-MP) for inhibition of CYP2E1 and c-Jun-terminal Kinase (JNK) in acetaminophen overdose
  • Principal Investigator of the largest case series currently in the literature of prospective, concurrent high-risk acetaminophen overdose patients treated with IV N-Acetylcysteine and IV 4-MP
  • Poisoning and Drug Overdoses in children and adults
  •  Synthetic Cannabinoids pharmacology, toxicology, and epidemiology
  •  Smoking Prevention in youth
