Personal Health
Promoting healthy, consensual relationships
Historically, resources for personal health and education for individuals with intellectual and developmental delays have been limited and censored.
MMI understands the importance of providing these resources.
- We developed a multidisciplinary personal health team to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families and caregivers.
- Our team explored local and national networks and fostered relationships with local organizations to develop a resource library to serve individuals and families.
- Plain language: We have personal health services for people with disabilities and can connect you with other resources too.
Information Helps People of all Abilities
- Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have intimate encounters at a rate commensurate to their peers without disabilities.
Information is Vital for Health, Safety and Wellness
- Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities experience sexual assault and rape at a rate seven times higher than their peers without disabilities.
- In Nebraska, only 37% of adult females with intellectual and developmental disabilities have received a pap smear in the past three years, a routine preventative care recommendation, compared to 70% of adult females without intellectual and developmental disabilities nationally.
What Services are Right for You
Few people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have been provided with developmentally appropriate, comprehensive personal health education, so this is an area of need for almost everyone and a great place to start.
Families and staff may feel comfortable learning on their own. You may also wish to join a workshop to learn with others. MMI also holds workshops that provide tips for successfully communicating about these topics with your children and clients.
- If you think you may benefit from a discipline-based service, contact the provider offering that service. If you are unsure, our staff can help you decide.
- Many MMI professionals have completed the Askable Adults Matter Training and would be happy to try to answer one specific question or direct you to the appropriate related resources.
