Discipline-Based Services

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapists serve adolescents and adults in an outpatient capacity to address activities of daily living related to sexuality and relationships, including:
- Adaptive equipment for intimacy.
- Health care management.
- Home and bedroom management.
- Money management (expenses related to dating, moving out, starting a family.)
- Personal hygiene.
An appointment may include assessing current functional status and determining needs. Contact your primary care provider to request a prescription for occupational therapy.
MMI's occupational therapist who specializes in activities related to healthy sexuality and living is Samantha “Sam” Montemarano, MOT, OTR/L.
Physical Therapy
Many youth, adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental delays would benefit from extra education regarding their genitalia (private parts) and how to keep it healthy.
Additional support may also be useful to teach contracting and relaxing pelvic floor muscles in preparation for insertion of tampons, routine gynecological exams or sexual activity.
MMI's pediatric physical therapist who specializes in sexual health services is Anne Woodruff Jameson, PT, DPT. Annie's areas of training and focus include:
- Incontinence: urinary and/or fecal (problems peeing or pooping).
- Pelvic floor physical therapy (a prescription is needed from your primary care provider.)
- Pelvic pain and physical barriers to adults engaging in sex (pain or problems in private parts).
Psychology
MMI's licensed psychologist who specializes in sexual health services is Lisa Neitzke, PhD, LMHP, PLP. Lisa can help people find out what they understand about sex, and with behavior problems.
Lisa is an adult provider at MMI who has treated behavioral sexual health issues at Beatrice State Developmental Center and for Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services. A psychology appointment with Lisa may include:
- An assessment called the Socio-Sexual Knowledge and Attitudes Test-Revised (SSKAAT-R) to determine an individual’s current understanding of relationships and sex.
- Treating expressions of inappropriate sexual behavior.
Recreational Therapy
MMI's Department of Recreational Therapy currently provides our community-based sex education.
Future goals for expanding this program include offering 1:1 and group services in community accessibility related to skills obtaining and maintaining relationships, including friendships and romantic relationships. Additionally, we hope to offer 1:1 a la carte sex education classes for individuals who may need extra reinforcement on certain topics.
