Feeding and Swallowing

Did you know that occupational therapists can help with self-feeding challenges?
Feeding and mealtime challenges can be especially frustrating to caregivers of infants and young children with a complex medical history that affects their sensorimotor development.
Postural, oral-motor and sensory issues can contribute to the everyday frustrations involved with feeding and eating. MMI occupational therapists can help you understand the symptoms your child is experiencing and explain the treatments available. Our therapeutic priority is to facilitate a positive mealtime experience for caregivers and the child by improving oral feeding skills and acceptance.
Our occupational therapists also support children and young adults whose arm/hand and oral motor coordination challenges limit their ability to eat and drink independently. Prior to establishing a treatment plan, we evaluate each client’s ability to manage and swallow food and liquid safely in collaboration with caregivers in order to increase participation in self-feeding.

Feeding Assessment and Evaluation
There are so many different types of feeding problems. Because of this, assessment and treatment programs at MMI are specific to your child. We offer a variety of services delivered through multiple providers to address the many different needs of children with feeding and swallowing difficulties.
