Pharmacogenetic testing provides valuable insights into how an individual's genetic makeup may affect how they react to medicine.

The MMI Department of Genetic Medicine's Pharmacogenetics Clinic offers an approach to personalized medicine through pharmacogenetic testing that a patient's provider can integrate into clinical practice.

Upon initial evaluation, our team assesses whether pharmacogenetic testing could potentially impact the patient's care. Pharmacogenetic testing may provide important information about how a person's genetic composition affects their response to medication, including absorption, distribution throughout the body, and metabolism/elimination. For those interested in proceeding with testing, we facilitate the ordering and coordination of the necessary tests.

Following completion of testing, patients are scheduled for a follow-up clinic visit to review their testing report. This report contains personalized recommendations based on the patient's genetic profile, which can then be shared with their current and future healthcare providers. By incorporating this information into medication-related decisions, patients can optimize treatment outcomes and minimize the risk of adverse drug reactions.
