Down Syndrome Clinic

This clinic provides follow-up counseling, resources and health maintenance information for families of infants under 1 year of age who have been diagnosed with Down syndrome.

Through this clinic, MMI's Department of Genetic Medicine offers families an evaluation and consultation for babies suspected to have Down syndrome. This initial evaluation can happen while the newborn is still in the hospital or at the Munroe-Meyer Institute after the baby has gone home.

A genetic test called a karyotype, also known as Chromosome Analysis, will rule out or confirm a Down syndrome diagnosis. The family receives initial genetic counseling which involves physicians and genetic counselors. At the time of the Down syndrome diagnosis, the family is given resource materials about Down syndrome and offered a one-time follow-up appointment in the Down Syndrome Clinic.
