Cystic Fibrosis Clinic

The Cystic Fibrosis Clinic provides genetic and health maintenance information and resources for patients and families with cystic fibrosis.
- Specialists use a multidisciplinary approach to offer diagnosis and treatment for both inpatients and outpatients with pediatric cystic fibrosis.
- Clinic staff have extensive training and experience in the treatment and management of cystic fibrosis.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that attacks the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States annually. The condition is caused by a gene and its protein product that causes the body to produce very thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and can lead to life-threatening lung infections. The mucus can also obstruct the pancreas and prevent natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
Specialty Care
The pediatric clinic is a partnership between UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute and Children’s Nebraska. Your child’s multidisciplinary health care team will include providers from both groups, specifically from these specialties:
- Care coordinator.
- Nutritionist.
- Pulmonologist.
- Research technologist.
- Respiratory therapist.
- Social worker.
When appropriate, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, and ear, nose, and throat services are also consulted.
Clinic Details
Diagnosis of cystic fibrosis, carrier status, or abnormal newborn screen.
Since cystic fibrosis is a chronic illness, affected individuals will need to be followed closely and monitored by our specially trained providers throughout their lifetime. Treatment for cystic fibrosis involves a customized multidisciplinary team approach. This may include antibiotics, inhaled medications, nutritional management and social/psychological support.
Health care providers and specialists will work closely with you and/or your child to understand the disease and to develop a treatment plan that will allow your child to live as independently and typical as possible. Providers are also actively involved in research to find better treatments for cystic fibrosis. You may have the opportunity to participate in clinical studies if you choose.
