Advocacy and the Arts is a transition program for students age 18 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities that teaches support training and includes an art program.

Under the guidance of MMI faculty and professional teaching artists, students develop support skills, build upon their art skills and increase self-confidence while exploring a variety of mediums and arts-based careers. Students work on making choices and having their own autonomy when it comes to being an artist.

This social skills program offers students the opportunities to learn:

  • Self-awareness.
  • Support.
  • Self-expression.
  • Rights and responsibilities.
  • Choices and decision making.
  • Finding your voice.
  • Effective communication.
  • Teamwork and cooperation.
This project stems from the MMI-UNO Trailblazers program and Nebraska's UCEDD at the Munroe-Meyer Institute.
