Michael J. Leibowitz, PhD
Michael Leibowitz, PhD, was a licensed psychologist, Hattie B. Munroe Professor, and former director of UNMC's Munroe-Meyer Institute and Nebraska's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.
Leibowitz joined UNMC as the director of the department of psychology in 1974 after graduating from the University of Maryland with a doctorate. In 1983, he was appointed deputy director of clinical programs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Meyer Rehabilitation Institute.
In 1997, Leibowitz took leadership of the UCEDD, housed at what had then become UNMC's Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics & Rehabilitation. He served as director of MMI from 2007 to 2015. During that time, staffing increased by 60%, federal grants across all departments increased by 59%, the institute saw a total budget growth of 58% and the University of Nebraska Medical Center named MMI an official academic unit.
Leibowitz retired from MMI in September 2015. The UNMC community joined with family and friends to celebrate his accomplishments and tenure and applaud his many contributions to the institute.
