About the Symposium
The Generative AI at UNMC | Summer Symposium is sponsored by the McGoogan Library, College of Public Health, Office of Faculty Development and Academic Affairs.
Date: Tuesday, July 23, 2024
Time: 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Location: Truhlsen Events Center and virtually via Zoom (keynote portion only)
Cost: Free and open to members of the UNMC and UNO communities
Refreshments will be provided.
This symposium offers a forum to bring together educators, instructional designers, administrators, librarians and technologists from UNMC and UNO to consider the impacts of generative AI on education.
It offers a chance to strengthen UNMC’s community of practice that is developing around AI use and show what people on campus are doing in this space.
Topics could range from use of generative AI in assignment creation or grading, information literacy instruction, ethics of generative AI in education, generative AI-enabled tools and educational research, and deepfakes and creative works in education.

About the Keynote | Dr. Marcia Shade
Marcia (pronounced Mar-see-uh) Shade, BS, PhD, RN is a nurse, scholar, educator, leader, and innovator. She is an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Shade also is the founder and CEO of Voice-It Inc., a start-up company that focuses on creating digital health solutions that engage and empower consumers of health care.
Dr. Shade's scholarship focuses on improving pain management in older adults and has received both intramural and extramural funding to lead her program of research. Dr. Shade has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has given presentations at numerous scientific meetings across the country. Dr. Shade is an engaged member of the Gerontological Society of America, US Association for the Study of Pain, American Society of Pain Management Nursing, and the Midwest Nursing Research Society. She has received national recognition and awards for her contributions to nursing research, most recently the 2023 Excellence in Nursing Care of Older Adult Award and 2023 Research Award from the American Society of Pain Management Nursing.
As a nurse innovator and entrepreneur, Dr. Shade works to extend the “reach and impact” of her research by creating and testing artificial intelligence technology to improve older adult’s pain management. She and her start-up company were selected as a winner of a highly competitive National Institutes of Health, National Institutes on Aging Small Business Accelerator that increases diversity in business research and development.

Starting Wednesday, June 19, 2024, the UNMC AI Task Force co-chairs, Rachel Lookadoo and Emily Glenn, will host a monthly online discussion series focused on what's new in AI with UNMC colleagues. This series contributes to the UNMC community of practice and occurs in coordination with the summer symposium.
