The Scientist Development award is designed to support promising Department of Internal Medicine faculty making the transition from fellowship/post-doctoral training or as early faculty into a career as an independent researcher.

Annual Department Research Awards

Nominations are sought in the following categories for the annual Internal Medicine Research Awards. Learn more and apply here

  1. Faculty Career Excellence Award: This award recognizes established faculty (professor level) for excellence in their research career. The awardee will have a longstanding research career as demonstrated by publications, external funding, and national/international recognition in their area of expertise.  
  2. Faculty Clinical Research Award: This award recognizes junior or mid-level faculty (assistant or associate level) for excellence in a clinical research program. The awardee will have publications, external funding, and an emerging reputation in their area of expertise.  
  3. Faculty Basic Science Research Award: This award recognizes junior or mid-level faculty (assistant or associate level) for excellence in a basic science (bench) program. The awardee will have publications, external funding, and an emerging reputation in their area of expertise.  
  4. Fellowship Research Award: This award recognizes a fellow who has demonstrated excellence in his/her specific research project.  This category includes individuals who are part of a clinical sub-specialty fellowship within the Internal Medicine Department. This awardee will have performed work that leads to presentation at a national meeting and/or publication of the work.  
  5. Resident Research Award: This award recognizes a resident who has demonstrated excellence in a specific research project. This awardee has presented or will present their work at a regional or national meeting or has submitted their work for publication.  
  6. Post-Doctoral Research Award: This award recognizes a post-doc who has demonstrated excellence in a specific research project. This awardee has presented or will present their work at a regional or national meeting or has publications. This awardee may have received postdoctoral extramural research funding. This awardee must have a PhD, must not be faculty, and must not be a visiting scientist.  
  7. Daughton Award: This award is for a non-faculty senior employee in the Department of Internal Medicine whose professional activities, such as teaching, publications, or scholarly research, exceed what is normally expected of individuals in the position. This award recognizes non-faculty members of research teams who demonstrate creativity and leadership and have, over the long term, excelled, as noted by presentations made, publications, or key roles on funded research projects. This award is named after David Daughton, who had an exemplary career as a non-faculty researcher in smoking cessation in Internal Medicine at UNMC.  
  8. Graduate Student Research Award: This award recognizes a UNMC graduate student who has demonstrated initiative and dedication in pursuing a research project, has presented or published their work, received recognition for outstanding research contributions, or exhibited qualities that the nominator believes exemplify excellence within a research team setting. 
  9. Medical Student Research Award: This award recognizes a UNMC medical student who has shown initiative in a research project and has performed exemplary work, resulting in a presentation or publication of work done in conjunction with the Department of Internal Medicine.  
  10. Faculty Research Mentoring Award: This award recognizes mid-level or senior faculty (associate or professor level) excellence in providing mentorship in research activities to one or more faculty colleagues. The awardee will have evidence of especially robust mentoring relationships as shown by consistent mentoring meetings and the academic output of their mentees, and the qualitative report from the mentee(s).  The mentee is expected to have a developing research career as demonstrated by publications, external funding, and emerging recognition in their expertise.
