Trainee Research & Scholarly Activity

Supporting Research & Scholarly Activity

Research and scholarly activity are encouraged and supported during your education and training. We can help with starting a project, jumping into an established project, linking you to a mentor and guiding you to needed resources.

Research Rotation

Residents may choose to participate in dedicated research months during their second and third year. Opportunities exist for one-month or three-month research rotations pending the scope of their work.

Residents are encouraged to visit the resident intranet to view recorded didactics to ensure you are submitting your best research rotation application and getting the most out of your research month(s).

Quality Improvement & Patient Safety
A dedicated QI/PS curriculum aligns ACGME competencies and milestones with our health system goals and priorities in the areas of Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and High Value Care.
Scholarly Weeks
Residents can create scholarly weeks during some clinical rotations to focus on progressing their existing research projects.
Senior Seminar
Third year residents present a topic of their choice to the residency program as a “capstone” presentation.
Poster & Abstract Submissions
Residents are encouraged to present their scholarly work at on-campus as well as local, regional and national poster and abstract competitions.
Journal Submissions
In addition to submitting to journals relevant to their type of research work, all residents and fellows at UNMC are encouraged to submit their work to our very own journal, the Graduate Medical Education Research Journal.
Faculty Research Mentors
World-renowned clinician scientists are among our faculty who mentor residents in their scholarly work. Each Department of Internal Medicine division has a designated point person to help residents learn more about research opportunities in a particular specialty field.
A group of trainees meet with an Internal Medicine faculty member in his lab.

Internal Medicine Research Council

Have a question about scholarly activity in a particular specialty field? The Internal Medicine Research Council is made up experienced researchers from all of our divisions.

Resources

The Department of Internal Medicine encourages scholarly activity and provides resources for UNMC trainees who want to pursue clinical and translational research or other scholarly activity.
