Internal Medicine Residency News

The Internal Medicine Residency Program announced its award recipients for the 2023-24 academic year at its annual banquet in June. 

At this celebratory event, we recognize our graduates as well as the individual residents who stood out among their peers, select faculty members, and one Internal Medicine division for its outstanding work in support of residency education.

Best Teaching Division Award – Infectious Diseases

This award is presented to a division in recognition of the time dedicated to resident education.

Preliminary Resident Award – Dr. Vidul Murali

This award is presented to a preliminary resident who demonstrated outstanding dedication and performance in their intern year.

Rookie of the Year Award – Dr. Katy Kim

This award is presented to a first year house officer in recognition of hard work, positive attitude, and promise as a resident in Internal Medicine.

Senior Seminar Award - Dr. Grayson Huben

This award is presented to a senior resident whose Senior Seminar presentation was recognized as the best presentation of the year.

Resident Educator Award – Dr. Brett Begley

This award is presented to a resident in recognition of time dedicated to the education of other house officers and students.

Outpatient Care Award –  Dr. Ellen Janssen

This award is presented to a senior resident in recognition of excellence in outpatient care at UNMC.

Most Valuable Player Award –  Dr. Claire Schmitz

This award is presented to a house officer who is the best team player.

Residents’ Fellow of the Year Award – Dr. Jon Hall (Nephrology Fellow)

This award is presented by the residents to the fellow that embodies an ideal consultant and has contributed the most to resident education.

Professionalism Award –  Dr. Jake Haiar

This award is presented to a resident who was the exemplar of professionalism in the UNMC Internal Medicine Program.

Senior Resident JEDI Award, endowed –  Dr. Debra Wekesa

This award is presented to the senior resident who has been an outstanding role model and demonstrated commitment to values of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion throughout his/her training.

Senior Resident Award, endowed – Dr. Remy Sass

This award is presented to a senior resident in recognition of excellence in patient care, education and academics at UNMC.

Resident Internist Award, endowed –  Dr. Brett Begley

This award is presented to a senior resident who is a model internist for his or her fellow house officers.

The Caring Physician Award, endowed – Dr. Kate Haiar

This award is presented to a senior resident who demonstrates a caring and kind attitude toward all of his or her patients.

Osler Award –  Dr. Trek Langenhan

Given to a faculty member who has contributed the most to resident education in the past academic year.
