Scholars Program

The INBRE Scholars program provides meaningful research experiences while also creating a pipeline of talented undergraduate students to participate in the research.

More than 130 undergraduate students have successfully completed the program. Of those, 44 percent have gone on to graduate school, 35 percent have entered professional school and 15 percent are in the scientific workforce in some capacity.

One scholar described the experience this way:

"I love the work I do because I can say at the end of the day I've done something to further scientific knowledge." – Nick Palermo

2024 Scholars

Our 2024 scholars spent 10 weeks over the summer conducting research at UNMC, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Creighton University, then returned to their home campuses in the fall to continue their laboratory research.

Eligibility

Each school has its own requirements, but the recommended requirements are a 3.0 GPA and two letters of recommendation, as well as a strong interest in scientific research. Contact the INBRE faculty on your campus.

Program Details

The two-year scholars program provides opportunities for mentored full-time research during the first summer in the program. This takes the form of a research foundations workshop and is executed on one of the PhD grant training campuses. The scholars then commit to part-time research on their home campuses during the following two academic years and full-time research on their home campus during their second summer in the program.

Financial support is provided for these undergraduates throughout their tenure as INBRE Scholars. Scholars are required to present their research at the annual INBRE meeting and at the annual meeting of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences. They are also encouraged to present their work at national meetings, such as Experimental Biology, Cell Biology, and Neurosciences.
