Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)

About HMPV
According to the Cleveland Clinic, human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus that usually causes symptoms similar to a cold. Symptoms might include sneezing, wheezing, runny nose, or a sore throat. Most cases are mild, but young children, adults over 65 and people with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk for serious illness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, human metapneumovirus (HMPV) can lead to both upper and lower respiratory diseases across all age groups. First identified in 2001, HMPV belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which includes respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The expanded application of molecular diagnostic testing has enhanced the recognition and understanding of HMPV as a significant contributor to respiratory infections.
