FAQs

Do I need to have a mentor identified before I apply?

Yes. The MSIA program is set up for those who have identified and been in contact with a UNMC graduate faculty member who will serve as their mentor and advisory/supervisory chair. The exception to this would be the sub-plans of Oral Biology, Biological Defense & Health Security, and Applied Behavior Analysis. These sub-plans will assign a mentor after admission.

Can I apply to multiple programs at one time?

Yes, but you will be required to pay an application fee for each program and there may be additional requirements and materials required of other graduate degree granting programs.

What's the difference between the MSIA program and the IGPBS program?

MSIA is intended for students focusing on clinical, multi-disciplinary research and those doing clinically-relevant basic research in areas not associated with the IGPBS program. Funding is not guaranteed for those admitted to any of the MSIA sub-plans; applicants who require financial assistance are responsible for determining if funding is available through their mentor or their mentor's department.

The Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (IGPBS) program is a more traditional basic science PhD program with six doctoral programs for applicants to choose from. Those admitted to the IGPBS program receive financial support and are required to maintain full-time status.

Am I guaranteed funding as a full-time student?

No. Funding is generally provided by the mentor or mentor's department or possibly through a grant if available. It is the applicants responsibility to determine if funding is available. Funded students are typically funded as Graduate Research Assistants or Teaching Assistants. Additional information on potential funding can be found on the Graduate Studies Costs and Funding page.

Can I apply as a part-time student?

Yes. Part-time students are welcome to apply, but are not eligible for graduate assistant funding. Part-time students are also required to identify a mentor prior to admission. UNMC employees may be eligible for the Employee Scholarship.
