The Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at UNMC will produce graduates who master the unique set of knowledge, skills and attitudes that create a Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician.

The fellow will:
- Construct a comprehensive knowledge base regarding acute and chronic sports and non-operative musculoskeletal injuries, treatment of these injuries, strategies for treatment prevention.
- Expertly perform the musculoskeletal and neurologic physical exam, as well as procedure skills that enhance diagnosis and treatment of sports medicine and other non-operative musculoskeletal injuries.
- Demonstrate the clinical judgment needed to provide care in multiple setting including but not limited to a sports medicine clinic, an athletic training room, and coverage of sporting events.
- Communicate clearly, directly, and respectfully with athletes, athletes' families, referring physicians and all members of the sports medicine multidisciplinary health care team.
- Exhibit clinical acumen in making return to play decisions for the athletes that appropriately balance medical science, athlete's motivation, and the physician's ethical responsibility to their athlete patients.
- Promote the concept of “Exercise as Medicine” through health and wellness promotion along with ensuring safe exercise and sports participation with the appropriate use of pre-participation examinations and evidence-based screening test.
- Develop a mindset of “meeting their patients where they are” by creating and communicating diagnostic and treatment plans that considers the patient’s goals, health literacy, and social determinants of health.
- Submit scholarly activity (case presentation or original research) for presentation at a national Sports Medicine meeting. The fellow will write up this case (or another suitable clinical case) in a format suitable for publication.
- Successfully pass the exam for a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.
- Seek a job after graduation that is consistent with the fellow's personal values and career goals.
