Jayme Dowdall, MD

Jayme Dowdall, MD, is a laryngeal surgeon and associate professor at UNMC. She is a board-certified otolaryngologist with fellowship training in laryngology and professional voice from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. 

Dr. Dowdall treats all voice, swallowing and airway disorders. She is nationally and internationally recognized for her research on voice and airway disorders and is a frequent guest speaker. She has expertise in advanced diagnostics such as transnasal bronchoscopy, state-of-the-art treatment such as office-based laser surgery, and a holistic approach for complex rehabilitation. She specializes in a multi-disciplinary approach for care of the professional voice, laryngeal contributions to breathing disorders, intubation injury, sex biology relating to airway disorders, gender care and the impact of sleep disorders on upper airway condition symptoms.

Dr. Dowdall is known for her patient-centered approach and prefers to collaborate across disciplines and institutions to create integrated and holistic treatment plans for patients.

Research

From a research perspective, Dr. Dowdall focuses on intubation injury, and airway and sleep disorders and how these may differentially manifest by sex and across the lifespan. The work of her team is regularly presented at local, regional, national, and international meetings. She co-founded the Nebraska Talent Incubator to help trainees learn the process of research. Her current research focuses on coaching in academic medicine, living with tracheostomy and intubation injury, and how to craft innovative interprofessional airway educational programming.

Honors and Service

In 2022, Dr. Dowdall became part of the creative coaching program with UNMC faculty development. She holds certifications for Academic Medical Centers with Spiro Coaching Institute, CliftonStrengths coaching with Gallup and Emotional Quotient-Inventory 2.0 for Emotional Intelligence. She was a coach for the UNMC faculty development leadership certificate program in 2022.  

She has received awards for clinical collaboration, education, leadership, research and innovation. As a clinical innovator, she has integrated screening for sleep disorders in laryngology patients. Since 2019, she has collaborated with the airway anesthesia team at UNMC to help bring hypoglossal nerve stimulation to Nebraska.  In 2023, she received the ambulatory patient education fund grant for "Just in time patient education needs for outpatient tracheostomy management" and the 2023 UNMC College of Medicine Innovation in Education grant for a decision-making workshop co-designed with Dr. Kristy Carlson and UNMC medical students. She is also the founder of Airway Education LLC and Amplified Resonance LLC.
