Student Rotation
Medical students from UNMC and visiting students from other medical colleges can enroll in our four-week fourth-year elective rotation. Third-year medical students from UNMC may also choose to spend two weeks of their general surgery rotation in the emergency department.
All students will work shifts in emergency department of our primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, and attend weekly resident didactics. Other features of the rotation include a one-to-one faculty-to-student teaching ratio on emergency medicine shifts, dedicated student didactics and student centered simulations, laceration repair labs, splint labs and procedure labs.
Our department is actively involved in teaching during the pre-clinical years at UNMC. This includes a longitudinal point of care ultrasound curriculum and a two-week boot camp that serves as in introduction to the clinical years. We are excited to involve medical students early in their education by facilitating skills labs, lectures and shadowing experiences through the Emergency Medicine Interest Group.
Selective / Elective Opportunities
Phase 2 core clerkship year medical students who wish to gain experience in the field of emergency medicine may request to perform a selective while on the required basic surgery rotation. Students will evaluate patients and present directly to attendings while working shifts in the emergency department. Additional educational activities include splint labs, laceration repair labs and simulation.
Space is limited. Interested students must make the surgery clerkship coordinator aware of this request as soon as possible. This option is only available to current UNMC medical students while on the required basic clerkship surgery rotation.
This elective is available for current UNMC fourth-year medical students and must be prearranged with the student clerkship coordinator. This experience is at our primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, which is a large community and academic emergency department and Level 1 trauma center. Students will evaluate and manage patients under direct supervision of an attending physician. Additional exposure to specialized areas of emergency medicine are included with experiences with hyperbaric medicine and toxicology/poison center. Optional exposure to emergency medical services are available as well. Students will attend dedicated didactics and educational experiences which include simulation, procedure labs and cadaver labs. Final rotation grades are compiled from performance on shifts, student presentations and final test.
Students interested in pursuing emergency medicine as a career are strongly encouraged to arrange a meeting with our clerkship director, Amy Cutright, MD, to assist guiding students through off-campus rotation site ideas, ERAS and the interview season.
Special off-campus electives in emergency medicine at other medical centers can be arranged for a learning experience not available within our department. An off-campus elective application form must be submitted for this experience. The primary concern is to identify responsible and acceptable faculty in absentia who can assure an active clerkship and offer an evaluation of performance. A student evaluation of this clerkship will be required upon completion.
