Emergency Medicine Interest Group
The emergency medicine interest group is an organization whose purpose is to expose students to the practice of emergency medicine through a variety of events and meetings. It is a student-run organization that elicits the help of various emergency physicians for the task of introducing the basic concepts and skills needed in an emergency department.
The group's mission includes:
- Creating in interest in emergency medicine for UNMC medical students.
- Forming a mutual support group for UNMC students pursuing a career in emergency medicine.
- Providing mentorship for students applying for a residency in emergency medicine.
- Disseminating information about the emergency medicine field.
- Facilitating learning opportunities and clinical skills in emergency medicine.

- Rural emergency medicine and farm accidents.

- Emergency preparedness.
Hands-on workshops
The emergency medicine interest group is one of the few student groups on campus that gives a first- and second-year medical students a chance to learn hands-on clinical skills. Opportunities include:
- Casting / splinting.
- Intubations.
- Ultrasound.
- Suturing.
- Slit lamp.
- Central line / IV placement.
Additional opportunities
- Shadow physicians at UNMC’s emergency department.
- Ride along opportunities possible with ground emergency medical services.
- Discuss medical emergencies with the public at community health fairs.
- Attend national emergency medicine conferences.
- Participate in summer research in the emergency department.
