Didactics
The residency's didactic program begins every year with a dedicated orientation month during July for all incoming interns. With only a few clinical shifts scheduled during the month to introduce interns to the department, plenty of time remains to give the interns a proper overview of their newly chosen specialty.
This year, interns were introduced to emergency medicine through lectures by our faculty focusing on chief complaints and basic life support, advanced cardiovascular life support, pediatric advanced life support and advanced trauma life support. Through a series of skills labs, use of high fidelity mannequins and a cadaver lab, interns are able to practice basic emergency medicine procedures such as suturing, slit lamp examinations and airway management.
For all levels of residents and faculty, lectures are held weekly on Thursdays. The didactic schedule includes monthly grand rounds, resident presentations on mortality and morbidity, case conference and small group discussions, along with regular faculty and guest lecture topics. Journal club is held monthly on Thursday evenings in a faculty member's home.
