Innovation

Is it better to think outside of the box or to build a whole new paradigm shifting one?

The integration of innovative thinking and design in medicine is driving transformative advancements in the health care industry. Now more than ever, health care professionals are testing limits and pushing boundaries while delivering on what matters most – optimal health outcomes.

The Department of Emergency Medicine is home to the MakER Lab, one the most prolific innovation hubs on the UNMC campus. The MakER Lab is equipped with an array of technologies and expertise that is vital to our problem-solving methodology. Our projects range from the use of artificial intelligence to develop a multimedia public awareness campaign on global child abuse, to developing and validating novel medical devices that translate directly into patient care. Our faculty members and residents are actively engaged in the innovative process as they are paired with industry experts such as legal consultants, regulatory advisors, injection molders and entrepreneurs from across the globe.

The MakER Lab was founded in 2020 as a direct response to the supply chain shortage caused by the pandemic. Utilizing 3D printing technology, we were able to produce the necessary equipment needed to keep our health care team safe as they cared for our community.

Today the lab is the central source for many of our innovation and entrepreneurship projects. We collaborate directly with UneMed and UneTech to develop go-to-market strategies that are unique to each technology including open-source and industry pathways.

Our primary objective at the MakER Lab is to develop transformative technologies that translate seamlessly into improving patient care.

Driven by an inventive nature

Thang Nguyen, PhD, focuses on developing technologies that could aid in eliminating health care disparities and improving global wellness.

Thang Nguyen, PhD, used the MakERLab located in the emergency department to collaborate with colleagues to create a medication aerosolizing device that can be used with a plastic soda bottle. The device, called Project FreeAir, was developed with funding by the UNMC Eugene Kenney Memorial Fund and is available free to the public.
