Julie Held, MD
Undergraduate: Iowa State University, BA in genetics
Medical School: Western University of Health Sciences
Residency: Emergency medicine residency, University of Nebraska Medical Center
Why Ultrasound: Upon completing my residency at UNMC and gaining experience in a community emergency department, I discovered the invaluable role of ultrasound in resource-limited environments, facilitating swift and precise bedside diagnostics. My desire to elevate patient care and sharpen my expertise led me to pursue an ultrasound fellowship. My true passion lies in the realms of ultrasound-guided procedures, its application in caring for critically ill patients, and sharing its diverse potential with fellow physicians. By doing so, I aim to enhance patient care across various types of emergency rooms and contribute to the broader medical community.
Rachel Johnson, MD
Undergraduate: Pepperdine University, BS in biochemistry
Medical School: University of Nebraska Medical Center
Residency: Internal medicine-pediatrics residency at Medical College of Wisconsin
Why Ultrasound: I have had a growing interest in point-of-care ultrasound for a number of years and really wanted to deepen my understanding and knowledge of ultrasound as well as my ability to use point-of-care ultrasound clinically. This fellowship opportunity has done that and more! Drs. Jared Marx and Cody Bonk have created a well-organized point-of-care ultrasound training opportunity. Through a mixture of hands-on scanning of standardized patients, simulation center learning, scanning of patients in the emergency department, group didactics and image review, we were immersed in structured point-of-care ultrasound learning every week. Teaching opportunities with the residents helped to solidify our understanding of the material while also improving our teaching abilities. Dr. Marx was a great mentor for our research interest and provided valuable insight into development of our own longitudinal point-of-care ultrasound programs within our own departments. It was such a great experience and I am so glad it did the fellowship. I know I will continue to rely on Dr. Marx’s and Dr. Bonk’s mentorship as I continue to further my development of point-of-care ultrasound in my own career and with my own program.
Jeremy King, DO
Undergraduate: University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, BA in chemistry
Medical School: Des Moines University - Osteopathic Medical Center
Residency: Family practice residency at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas
Why Ultrasound: I am doing the fellowship because I think this fellowship is on the cutting edge of medical care. Ultrasound now is so portable and has so many potential uses that make taking care of the patient faster, better and more efficient. Doing the fellowship will make me a better physician and it will give me a chance to grow, learn and be challenged in a different way.
