Emergency Medical Services Fellowship

Emergency Medical Services fellows take part in a mock emergency.

UNMC’s Department of Emergency Medicine offers a one-year emergency medical services fellowship training program. The mission of our fellowship is to train and develop motivated physicians to become leaders in medical oversight and emergency medical systems through immersive education and practice in the pre-hospital setting. We aim to achieve this by:

  • Exposure to various educational modalities with integrated curriculum including group-based learning and peer-to-peer education.
  • Exposure to the practice of prehospital medicine through agency ride time and graduated access to an EMS response vehicle.
  • Exposure to the breadth of patients through diversity of pathology, socioeconomic status and demographics guided by strong clinical role models.
  • Exposure to varied EMS agencies and administrative involvement spanning urban, rural and volunteer services.
  • Fostering a culture where the fellow’s input is encouraged and expected and wellness is a priority.
  • Competent in the basics of patient safety and quality improvement processes to become leaders in emergency medical services.

The Omaha metropolitan area is home to a population of nearly 1 million, allowing for plenty of opportunities to learn various EMS modalities. We are actively involved with a wide range of emergency medical services agencies including large urban fire departments, rural EMS agencies, and specialized agencies including tactical response, pediatric critical care transport and flight services.

Our ACGME-accredited fellowship is led by board-certified EMS physicians.

Benefits

Fellows will receive standard house officer benefits. They will be paid a salary according to post graduate-year and will be eligible for benefits typical to full-time houses officers.

Fellows will also be given the opportunity to practice clinically at two emergency departments that are affiliated with our sponsor institution, Nebraska Medicine and Bellevue Medical Center, which is located 20 minutes south of our main campus. These clinical shifts are not required as part of the fellowship.
