Area(s) of Emphasis:
Genetics Development Exposures & Injuries, Lifespan Diseases, Health Services Policy & Population Health
Research Interests:
Fetal Growth Restriction, Pre-eclampsia, Placenta, Pregnancy, Nanomedicine
Current Research Summary:
The research conducted in my laboratory aims to understand how normal human placental development and function are regulated, and to use this information to develop new, safer therapeutics for use in pregnancy. This research falls within two main areas: (i) Dissecting biological mechanisms critical to successful placentation, to inform new treatment strategies for the placental dysfunction observed in pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction. (ii) Development and testing of placental-specific therapies including placental-homing liposomes containing bioactive molecules or siRNA, placental homing peptide-microRNA inhibitor conjugates, and nanoparticles that are refractory to placental uptake.
