The James O. Armitage Center for Hematological Malignancies Research (JOACHMR) is comprised of interdisciplinary teams of renowned hematologists, oncologists, hematopathologists and basic science investigators, working together to diagnose and treat leukemias, lymphomas and multiple myelomas. They are actively involved in basic, translational and clinical research related to hematological malignancies. The JOACHMR has a large computerized clinical database, including pathology and genetic information on lymphoma cases as well as a large tissue bank of frozen lymphoma specimens and normal lymphoid tissues, which is an invaluable resource for the work of the Center.

What's In a Name?

The story behind our namesake.

Dr. Armitage started the lymphoma and stem cell transplant programs at UNMC in the early 1980’s. UNMC was one of the first transplant centers to pioneer the use of peripheral blood stem cells for use in the transplant which has now become the standard of care at all centers worldwide. Dr. Armitage was a major part of this early discovery and published many of the early lymphoma peripheral blood stem cell transplant studies. In addition, he has also been a major contributor to the research and literature evaluating the biology and classification of lymphomas as well as many of the early clinical trials with new agents for the treatment of lymphoma. These activities have put UNMC at the top of the list for institutions that specialize in lymphoma research.
