PMHNP Clinical Education Stipend Program

A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner works with a patient.

The BHECN PMHNP Clinical Education Stipend Program is designed to recruit and retain nurse practitioner preceptors and students in the field of psychiatry across Nebraska, with a focus on rural, under-resourced, and justice-involved communities. The program offers stipends to qualified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs), physician assistants, and psychiatrists who supervise students enrolled in Nebraska PMHNP programs at UNMC, Creighton, or Clarkson. Preceptors must complete at least 90 hours of supervision per semester, while students are required to complete at least 90 clinical hours in rural, under-resourced, and justice-involved communities (see eligible settings below).

Preceptors

Preceptors can apply online (using the designated application portal below) before each semester, confirming their hours at the semester’s end, with hours verified by the educational institution. See eligibility criteria below. Preceptors in rural, underserved, and justice-involved communities are eligible for a $2,500 stipend per semester, while those in other areas receive $1,000.

Preceptors must meet the following eligibility criteria to be eligible to apply:

  • Must be committed to precepting a student for the upcoming semester
  • Must precept a student from a Nebraska PMHNP program at UNMC, Creighton University, or Clarkson College
  • Must be a PMHNP, physician assistant, or psychiatrist in Nebraska
  • Will provide at least 90 hours of supervision for the identified semester

PMHNP Students

Students from Nebraska PMHNP programs with confirmed clinical training experiences in rural, under-resourced, and justice-involved communities are eligible to apply. See eligibility criteria below. Selected students will receive a $500 stipend.

Students must meet the following eligibility criteria to be eligible to apply:

  • Enrolled in a Nebraska PMHNP program at UNMC, Creighton University, or Clarkson College
  • Have a confirmed clinical training experience for the following semester in a rural, under-resourced, or justice-involved community
  • Will complete at least 90 clinical hours during the identified semester
  • Must intend to enter clinical practice in Nebraska upon graduation

Applying for the Program

The stipend application cycles are open in the fall, spring, and summer semesters, and funds are distributed approximately one month after the hours are completed and confirmed (e.g., Spring semester funding will be processed in mid-May). It is important to note that these stipends may be taxable, and priority will be given to those in rural, under-resourced, and justice-involved areas due to limited funding. However, there is no limit to the number of times a preceptor or student may apply. This program aims to strengthen the psychiatric workforce in Nebraska by supporting the education and training of future practitioners. To align with BHECN’s mission, students applying to this program must intend to practice in Nebraska after graduating from their academic program.
